Skin, Sugar and Sexual Health – Expert Advice on the Expresso Show

This month on The Expresso Show, the spotlight was on real, relatable, and sometimes personal and unvoiced health topics.

From rosacea and sexual wellness to blood sugar control and youthful ageing, a powerful lineup of experts – including a dermatologist, GP, sexologist, and aesthetic doctor– joined Phytoceutics® CEO Laura Johnston to share holistic strategies and supplement solutions to support every stage of life. Here’s what went down across four must-watch episodes.

Understanding Rosacea: Sensitive Skin Demystified

“Sensitive, inflamed skin is a symptom, not a diagnosis. You need to know what’s causing the sensitivity.”

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that often goes undiagnosed – especially in people with a darker complexion. Dermatologist Dr Lauren Knight joined the Expresso couch to unpack common symptoms like redness, flushing, and skin sensitivity, and discussed how triggers like heat, stress, and spicy foods can make it worse.

Dr Knight emphasised the importance of identifying the cause behind inflamed skin and shared practical treatment options – from gentle, fragrance-free skincare and mineral sunscreen to targeted antibiotics and topical treatments like ivermectin.

Laura added a complementary nutritional angle, recommending omega-3s for inflammation, probiotics to support gut health (especially when using antibiotics), and zinc to support skin healing. Together, they reminded viewers that managing rosacea requires a holistic and consistent approach – starting from the inside out.

Let’s Talk About Sex: Why Sexual Wellness Matters

“Get in touch with a healthcare provider – it could be a psychologist – the biggest sex organ is the brain.”

In a refreshingly open and informative conversation, sexologist and gynaecologist Dr Mpume Zenda joined Laura to talk about sexual wellness – what it really means, the difference between sexual challenges and dysfunction, and why mental health plays such a big role.

Dr Zenda broke down the emotional and hormonal shifts that can impact libido, the myths around sexual pleasure (especially for women), and how understanding your cycle can lead to more empowered and connected intimacy. She also highlighted the need for more open conversations – both with partners and professionals.

Laura spoke about the role of gut health in emotional wellness, linking the gut-brain axis to mood, libido, and sexual function. Key supplements mentioned included Felix® (a saffron-based mood support supplement), adaptogens like ashwagandha, and probiotics for mood and hormone balance. The takeaway? Sexual wellness is health – and it’s time we spoke about it more.

Weight Loss, Mood & Blood Sugar Control

“We’re exercising, eating salads, but not losing weight. What are you drinking?”

The conversation turned practical as GP Dr Donny Fick and Laura tackled the hot topics of weight loss, mood, and blood sugar management. Donny shared clinical insights into South Africa’s rising obesity and diabetes rates, warning that even “healthy” habits can be sabotaged by sugary drinks and emotional eating.

He encouraged viewers to watch for common warning signs like irritability, brain fog, and sugar crashes throughout the day – and to consult professionals for a tailored approach to weight and glucose control.

Laura discussed how berberine, a plant compound found in barberry and Oregon grape, helps flatten post-meal glucose spikes, can reduce cravings, and supports fat metabolism. She stressed the importance of managing stress and sleep, both of which affect blood sugar and emotional eating patterns. Together, they emphasised the importance of combining science, self-awareness, and supplementation for long-term success.

Graceful Ageing: Inside-Out Beauty and Longevity

“There’s no one thing that’s going to make you look good forever. It’s about consistently investing in your future self.”

Ageing gracefully isn’t just about good genes – it’s about consistency and the right support. Dr Barlodien Kotze, a GP with a special interest in aesthetic medicine, joined Laura Johnston for a lively chat about how to maintain that youthful glow.

Common signs like fine lines, skin laxity, and dullness were discussed, along with the power of collagen stimulators, antioxidants, and mitochondrial support. Laura explained that beauty starts from within, spotlighting NAD+ precursors like NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), which support energy, cell turnover, and healthy ageing.

They also spoke about the benefits of healthy ageing compounds like spermidine, fisetin, resveratrol, and quercetin – all key to reducing “inflammageing” (age-related decline due to inflammation). Their advice? Invest in your skin early, take a holistic approach, and support hormonal changes (like perimenopause and menopause) with tailored supplements.

These episodes highlight a simple truth: health is holistic. Whether you’re facing a chronic condition or just trying to feel better day-to-day, the right support – nutritional, emotional, and medical – can make all the difference.
