Ashwagandha root is a source of many active compounds including steroidal compounds such as withanolides, several alkaloids and is recognised for its wide range of therapeutic uses. Also known as ‘Indian ginseng’ this ayurvedic botanical is renowned for its adaptogenic properties and roles in stress management, anxiety, fatigue and pain-relief. While adaptogens generally possess a more stimulating influence on the nervous system, Ashwagandha has a more calming effect on the body while helping to re-establishing balance. Research studies have also looked at its positive effects on stress, immunity, anti-inflammatory actions, cognitive function and gentle sedative action.

The ancient art of fermentation is the process of converting complex carbohydrate molecules to a pre-digested, simpler form. This enhances nutrient bioavailability, increases digestibility and antioxidant activity. Terranova combines both fermentation and fresh freeze drying methods to create the most exceptional biochemically active and nutritionally enhanced products.

Terranova Fermented Ashwagandha – Fermanolide™ contains an impressive array of alkaloids, withanolides and several sitoindosides. By using a patented ‘biotransforming fermentation technology’, the main compounds in Fermanolide™ are converted to their bioactive forms. Due to their bulky molecular structures, normally these saponins are prone to degradation. The mass of the original saponins decrease after fermentation by removing the sugar molecules in a process called deglycosylation. Research shows theses smaller molecules are directly bioactive and penetrate the body more easily. When fermentation is complete, Lactobacillus plantarum is inactivated. Interestingly, research shows these ‘parabiotics’ maintain health-promoting effects such as immune-modulation and fortification of intestinal barrier integrity.

Lactobacillus plantarum used in the fermentation process is able to break down Withaferin A, an anti-nutrient found in ashwagandha. The amount of Withaferin A in Fermanolide™ is less than 0.01%. The antioxidant compound Withanolide A has been increased by 56% in Fermanolide™. Research shows this powerful antioxidant provides increased neuroprotection and ensures functional physiological activity.
